Let’s start with what you wear. We know you want to talk about boards, but you’ve got to be dressed for success. If the weather and water are fairly warm, then a good pair of surfing shorts and a tight fitting shirt will do. The shirt serves to keep the board from causing irritation on your skin as you paddle out to catch a wave. Special shirts known as rash guards are lightweight, water resistant, and feature long sleeves and a high neck for maximum protection.

In colder climates, surfers are going to want to sport a wet suit. Specially designed models are ultra-light and warm, and give you plenty of room where it matters for surfing’s various movements. Typically made of neoprene, various thicknesses provide greater degrees of warmth. You might opt for a “shortie” that has short sleeves and legs in warmer water. In really cold stuff, a pair of booties is a good choice for warmth, and for protection against coral, jellyfish, and other nasty stuff. Gloves and hood are available in neoprene, too, for early and late season attacks on the waves in very chilly conditions.

Alright, let’s move to the boards. Various lengths and styles go by different names, and are used based on level of skill and sometime determined by sea conditions. Here are the basics. If you are just getting your feet wet, don’t be afraid to start with a beginner board. They are very buoyant and stable, made from durable high density foam. These “soft boards” will help you learn the fundamentals more quickly than standard boards would. Long boards typically exceed 8 feet, and run to about 11 feet. They are the most traditional style, and provide good stability for the beginner and intermediate surfer. As your skill increases to advanced level, you might consider a short board, usually measuring 5.5 feet to about 7 feet. They are tougher to stay on, but give the good surfer increased agility to find the right groove on the selected wave. In between is a class of boards known as mini malls. Measuring 7 to 8.5 feet, they offer good versatility for various surf conditions and the surfer’s level of experience.
